Wisconsin Boy Placed in Medically Induced Coma After Routine Tonsil Surgery Goes Horribly Wrong
In a chilling turn of events, 11-year-old Liam Klaver from Wisconsin has been left fighting for his life after complications from a seemingly routine tonsillectomy. What was meant to be a simple procedure on March 17, 2025, quickly spiraled into a nightmare for Liam and his family.
Liam’s parents, Dan and Ashleigh, were devastated when their son, after being sent home from surgery, began vomiting an alarming two liters of blood. The young boy had suffered a post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in his right carotid artery, the vital artery that supplies blood to the brain. As a result, Liam was slowly bleeding out, forcing his family into a desperate race against time.
In a desperate bid to save him, Liam underwent a second surgery, but things took an even darker turn. During this operation, he went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. For an agonizing ten minutes, doctors fought to revive him, managing to bring him back just in time. He was then placed on a ventilator and, for his safety, induced into a coma for 10 days.
Despite the terrifying setbacks, Liam’s family has shared small glimmers of hope in his recovery. On March 31, he was finally removed from the ventilator, and by early April, Liam was beginning to wake up, though the road to recovery remains long and uncertain. His grandmother, Tanya Coye, shared with local news, “He’s having to relearn everything. Eating, speaking, walking, talking… it’s all starting over for him.”
Liam’s parents have opened up about the emotional toll of his recovery in a heartfelt GoFundMe post. “Liam is becoming more alert, asking questions,” Ashleigh wrote. “He didn’t take the news very well that he had been in the hospital for almost three weeks. He just wants to go home.” Yet, despite the emotional weight, the family remains optimistic, noting that Liam is improving every day, even as he faces the daunting challenge of understanding what has happened to him.
Doctors are hopeful that Liam will fully recover, but he faces further surgeries ahead. A recent scan revealed a blood clot in his carotid artery, adding another layer of complexity to his recovery. His grandfather, David, remains hopeful that his grandson will one day return to doing what he loves most—playing lacrosse.
The community has rallied behind Liam, raising over $17,000 to support his medical expenses and recovery journey. As Liam continues to fight for his health, his family remains grateful for the outpouring of support, while holding on to the hope that this young boy will someday return to the life he knew before this tragedy struck.
