Patrick Mahomes and the motivation of hatred in the Super Bowl: “I hated the Patriots”
Patrick Mahomes, a three-time champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, recalled that as a child he hated the dynasty formed by the New England Patriots, so today he understands the detractors of the winning era that the team he leads has forged.
It’s funny because I was that guy. As a kid I was a Cowboys fan and hated the Patriots. Now I appreciate more the greatness of the great Patriots because I see how hard it was to do what they did,” said the quarterback at the opening night of Super Bowl LIX.
The Kansas City Chiefs, champions of the American Conference, appeared on the field at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, the site of the NFL Championship game that they will play next Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, surrounded by the cheers of dozens of fans.
Mahomes, who is looking to make his team the first to win three consecutive Super Bowls, referred to the dynasty that the Pats built with Tom Brady as quarterback who won six Super Bowls in the first two decades of this century.
At present, Mahomes, who is the guide of this new dynasty, said he has received advice from Brady, who serves as a star analyst for a television network.
“I’ve learned a lot from Tom Brady’s advice and I listen to him on his broadcasts,” he said.
Being part of one of the most hated teams is something that Mahomes says has made them stronger.
“When people are against you, you become a brotherhood, we know we are doing it the right way and we can achieve it time and time again if we are united on the pitch and with our supporters; it’s us against everyone else,” he said.
Travis Kelce: “It’s the biggest game of your life and a lot of people want you to lose”
In his turn in front of the media, Travis Kelce agreed with his passer.
“It’s the biggest game of your life and everyone is going to watch it and a lot of people want you to lose. We’ve been dreaming about this since we were kids and the lesson in all of this is: don’t let the hype and the noise get to you. Go out there and do your thing,” said the tight end, who is dating pop star Taylor Swift.
Andy Reid, head coach of the Chiefs, said that beating the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII a couple of years ago does not guarantee a new victory for his team.
“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to play against them again. We are the two best teams. The only ones left standing. Nick Sirianni did a great job to bring the Eagles back to the big game,” Reid concluded
